Flying
into the beautiful city of Capetown, we will overnight here before making
a six hour road transfer up the famous “Garden Route” of the East
coast of South Africa. Where our final destination will be Port St Francis.
From this beautiful traditional fishing village for the next 6 days we will
launch on a daily basis to dive with spawning squid that inhabit this part
of the country. Only recently discovered as a scientific point of interest,
film companies from around the world are now showing interest in documenting
this yearly natural occurance. We will benefit from the closed squid fishing
season to allow them to spawn and thus perpetuate their own kind, we will
be privileged to be some of the first people to witness this spectacular event,
in their natural habitat.
Imagine hundreds of acres of rocky and sandy seabed with thousands upon thousands
of female and male squid mating daily in the water column, the males with
their flamboyant mating dance to entice the female descending together to
the sandy bottom to deposit the pink fingers containing hundreds of eggs.
Add to this the hundreds of predators that come in to feed from both the squid
and their eggs. These include:- Short tail stingrays, Diamond rays, Ragged
tooth sharks and Smooth hound sharks.
Cape fur seals darting in and out performing a ballet like dance around the
squid, and catsharks. Occasionally we may be lucky to see both bottlenose
and common dolphins, Penguins and Brydes whales. All feeding on this fascinating
natural occurrence.
A typical day will see us breakfast at 08.00 launch at around 09.30 taking
2/3 dives during the day where most of the action takes place between 10.00
and 17.00 returning on completion to our hotel in Port St Francis.
The group will be lead by Tony White in conjunction with Mark and Gail Addison
of Blue Wilderness Diving, participants will be limited to six including Tony.
This is a rare opportunity for both underwater photographers and divers to
be one of the first people to witness a newly discovered natural underwater
occurrence.
